Bruselas.- El copiloto de un avión fletado se enfrentó con un hacha a tres furiosos leones en pleno vuelo mientras el piloto intentaba aterrizar el avión en emergencia en esta ciudad. Cuando el avión lo hizo, los aterrorizados pilotos destrozaron con el hacha la ventana de la cabina y se lanzaron por ella, dejando atrás a los tres rugientes leones.
Los leones, uno de ellos cachorro, iban rumbo a Alemania desde Londres. Lograron escaparse de su jaula mientras el avión de carga, de origen suizo, volaba sobre Bélgica.
El piloto, Paul Wuhrman, de 36 años, afirmó: «estábamos a 14.000 pies de altura sobre St. Nicholas (Bélgica), y de repente vimos las cabezas de dos leones mirando a través de la cortina que separa la cabina del fuselaje. Un tercero lamía mi bota. Obviamente, se habían escapado de sus jaulas.»
Cuando vio los hocicos de los leones a su espalda, gritó por la radio de emergencia: «Bruselas, Bruselas, ¿puedo realizar un aterrizaje de emergencia? Tengo tres leones en la cabina.»
Pensando que era un chiste, el operador en Bruselas le respondió: «¡Pues mételos en tu tanque!».

PILOT FIGHTS OFF LIONS IN PLANE
Brussels. -The copilot of a chartered plane fought three angry lions with a hatchet in midair today (July 16) while the pilot steered the aircraft to an emergency landing here. When the plane landed, the terrified pilots smashed the cockpit window with the hatchet and jumped to the ground, leaving the lions snarling behind them. The lions, one of them a cub, were on their way from West Germany to London. They broke out of their cage while the Swiss-chartered cargo plane was over Belgium.
Pilot Paul Wuhrman, 36, said: “We were at 14.000 feet over St.Nicholas (Belgium) and saw the heads of two lions peering through the curtain between the cockpit and the fuselage. A third was licking my boot. Obviously they had broken out of their cages”. When he saw the lions´muzzles behind his back, he yelled into the emergency radio frequency: “Brussels, Brussels, can I make an emergency landing? I have three lions in my cockpit”.Thinking it was a joke, the Brussels operator replied: “Just stick them into your tank!”.
