Queremos compartir con ustedes este documento, de naturaleza universal: la carta del Padre Arturo Sosa,  Superior General de la Compañía de Jesús, con motivo del fallecimiento del Papa Emérito Benedicto XVI.

Queridos hermanos,

La Compañía de Jesús comparte el dolor de toda la Iglesia con motivo del fallecimiento del Papa emérito Benedicto XVI, al tiempo que da gracias a Dios por el don de su persona a la Iglesia y al mundo.

Tenemos muchas razones para recordarle con profundo afecto y gratitud, no sólo por su servicio a la Iglesia universal como Vicario de Cristo, sino también por el aprecio que tantas veces manifestó hacia nuestra Compañía.

Durante su larga vida, Joseph Ratzinger conoció bien las fortalezas y las limitaciones de la Compañía de Jesús. Su fructífera actividad como estudioso y profesor de teología en Alemania, su labor como experto durante el Concilio Vaticano II y su responsabilidad como Prefecto de la Congregación para la Doctrina de la Fe, le llevaron a encontrarse con muchos jesuitas comprometidos con la reflexión teológica, bíblica, filosófica y canónica. Con ellos dialogó y colaboró, de manera positiva y franca, sin eludir las dificultades, pero buscando siempre sinceramente el mayor bien de la Iglesia. Baste recordar aquí su profundo respeto por el P. Henri de Lubac -uno de los autores que más le influyeron- y el interés y la estima por la Universidad Gregoriana que manifestó durante su visita en noviembre de 2006. La memoria de Benedicto XVI nos anima a continuar la investigación y el estudio teológicos, con total dedicación y seriedad, al servicio de la fe y de la cultura contemporánea.

Joseph Ratzinger también conocía y apreciaba la espiritualidad ignaciana. Poco después de su renuncia al pontificado, respondiendo a una pregunta sobre sus oraciones preferidas, citó en primer lugar el Sume, Domine, et suscipe de San Ignacio. En otra ocasión, dijo de esta oración que «siempre me parece demasiado elevada, tanto que casi no me atrevo a decirla, y sin embargo deberíamos siempre, una y otra vez, hacerla nuestra.» La segunda de sus oraciones preferidas se atribuye a San Francisco Javier: «Te amo porque eres mi Dios […]. Te amo porque tú eres tú«. Pero nos sentimos especialmente cercanos a él por su amor personal a Jesucristo y su apasionada y constante búsqueda del «rostro del Señor», magistralmente expresada en su trilogía sobre Jesús de Nazaret. Por eso, el recuerdo de Benedicto XVI permanece con nosotros como una invitación a conservar y cultivar una relación viva con la persona de Jesús, sin la cual nuestra vida pierde su sentido más profundo.

No han faltado retos difíciles durante el pontificado de Benedicto XVI. Él supo afrontarlos con humildad, valentía y constancia, dando guía y ejemplo a toda la Iglesia. Recuerdo especialmente la dramática y dolorosa realidad de los abusos sexuales por parte de sacerdotes y religiosos, de los que nosotros mismos, por desgracia, no estamos exentos. El modo en que Benedicto XVI asumió el peso y las consecuencias de este incalificable pecado de la Iglesia nos ha puesto en el camino correcto: tomar conciencia de esta dolorosa realidad, escuchar a las víctimas, hacer justicia en cada caso, buscar el modo de reparar el daño causado y tomar medidas para evitar que se repitan estos fallos. Es un camino que debemos seguir recorriendo, de manera aún más atenta, avanzando con toda la comunidad eclesial y con la sociedad civil. La integridad del testimonio de nuestra vida y el compromiso de conversión, siempre posible con la gracia de Dios, son exigencias de la vida cristiana, religiosa y sacerdotal que debemos tener siempre presentes.

La Compañía de Jesús, reunida en la CG 35 y encabezada por el recién elegido Superior General, P. Adolfo Nicolás, tuvo la oportunidad de sentir y saborear la cercanía y el afecto de Benedicto XVI cuando el Papa nos recibió en Audiencia el 21 de febrero de 2008. Su excelente discurso nos condujo al corazón de nuestra identidad espiritual y nos animó a vivir, con determinación y entusiasmo, la misión multidimensional característica de la Compañía: al servicio de la fe, la justicia y la cultura, entre y con los pobres, pensando con la Iglesia y en la Iglesia, con esa entrega «efectiva y afectiva» que hace de los jesuitas «colaboradores preciosos e insustituibles» del Vicario de Cristo. Fue ese momento de consolación y confirmación espiritual, al ser testigos de la mutua y armoniosa relación entre la Santa Sede y la Compañía, lo que -en palabras del Decreto 1 de la CG 35- nos invitó a vivir nuestra misión «con renovado vigor y celo», un compromiso al que seguimos tratando de responder cada día, con la ayuda del Señor y a pesar de nuestras limitaciones.

Al renunciar al papado, Benedicto XVI nos dio una brillante lección de humildad y libertad espiritual. Mostró su deseo de anteponer el bien de la Iglesia universal a todo lo demás. Hoy nos unimos a toda la Iglesia y especialmente al Papa Francisco en una oración de gratitud al recordar, con admiración, la integridad personal de Joseph Ratzinger y la profundidad magisterial de Benedicto XVI. Nos despedimos de él, confiados en que el Señor tendrá la bondad de acogerlo en la morada preparada desde hace tiempo para quienes le entregan su vida con generosidad.

Death of Benedict XVI, Pope Emeritus: Letter from Fr. Arturo Sosa, SJ

Dear Brothers,

The Society of Jesus shares the sorrow of the whole Church on the occasion of the death of the Pope Emeritus, Benedict XVI, at the same time giving thanks to God for the gift of his person to the Church and to the world.

We have many reasons to remember him with deep affection and gratitude, not only for his service to the universal Church as Vicar of Christ, but also for the esteem that he so often expressed for our Society.

During his long life, Joseph Ratzinger knew well the strengths and limitations of the Society of Jesus. His fruitful activity as a scholar and professor of theology in Germany, his work as an expert during the Second Vatican Council, and his responsibility as Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, led him to encounter many Jesuits committed to theological, biblical, philosophical and canonical reflection. He engaged them in dialogue and collaborated with them, in a positive and frank manner, not sidestepping difficulties but always sincerely seeking the greater good of the Church. It is enough here to recall his deep respect for Fr. Henri de Lubac – one of the authors who influenced him most – and the interest in and esteem for the Gregorian University that he expressed during his visit in November 2006. The memory of Benedict XVI encourages us to continue theological research and study, with total dedication and seriousness, for the service of faith and of contemporary culture.

Joseph Ratzinger also knew and appreciated Ignatian spirituality. Shortly after his resignation from the pontificate, answering a question about his favourite prayers, he cited in first place the Sume, Domine, et suscipe of St. Ignatius. On another occasion, he said of this prayer that “it always seems too high to me, so much so that I hardly dare say it, and yet we should always, again and again, make it our own.” The second of his favourite prayers is attributed to St. Francis Xavier: “I love you because you are my God […]. I love you because you are you.” But we feel especially close to him because of his personal love for Jesus Christ and his passionate and constant search for the “face of the Lord,” masterfully expressed in his trilogy on Jesus of Nazareth. For this reason, the memory of Benedict XVI stays with us as an invitation to preserve and cultivate a living relationship with the person of Jesus, without which our life loses its deepest meaning.

There was no shortage of difficult challenges during the pontificate of Benedict XVI. He knew how to face them with humility, courage and constancy, giving guidance and example to the whole Church. I recall especially the dramatic and painful reality of sexual abuse by priests and religious, from which we ourselves, unfortunately, are not exempt. The way in which Benedict XVI took on himself the weight and consequences of this unspeakable sin of the Church has set us on the right path: becoming aware of this painful reality, listening to the victims, doing justice in each case, seeking ways to repair the harm that has been done, and taking steps to prevent the repetition of such failures. It is a path we must continue to travel, in an even more attentive way, advancing with the whole ecclesial community and with civil society. The integrity of the witness of our life and commitment to conversion, always possible with the grace of God, are demands of Christian, religious and priestly life that we must always keep in mind.

The Society of Jesus, gathered together in GC 35 and headed by the newly elected Superior General, Fr. Adolfo Nicolás, had the opportunity to feel and relish the closeness and affection of Benedict XVI when the Pope received us in Audience on 21 February 2008. His excellent address led us to the heart of our spiritual identity and encouraged us to live, with determination and enthusiasm, the multi-dimensional mission characteristic of the Society: at the service of faith, justice, and culture, among and with the poor, thinking with the Church and in the Church, with that “effective and affective” devotion that makes Jesuits “precious and irreplaceable collaborators” of the Vicar of Christ. It was that moment of consolation and spiritual confirmation, as we witnessed the mutual and harmonious relationship between the Holy See and the Society, that – in the words of Decree 1 of GC 35 – invited us to live our mission “with renewed vigour and zeal,” a commitment to which we still seek to respond every day, with the help of the Lord and despite our limitations.

In resigning from the papacy, Benedict XVI gave us a brilliant lesson in humility and spiritual freedom. It showed his desire to put the good of the universal Church before everything else. Today we join with the whole Church and especially with Pope Francis in a prayer of gratitude as we remember, with admiration, the personal integrity of Joseph Ratzinger and the magisterial depth of Benedict XVI. We bid him farewell, confident that the Lord will be gracious in receiving him in the dwelling long prepared for those who give their lives to him with generosity.
