Venezuela: el PPE considera la condena a Leopoldo López una afrenta a la justicia y la democracia

El Partido Popular Europeo (PPE) condena enérgicamente el veredicto injusto y con motivación política contra el líder opositor venezolano Leopoldo López, que fue condenado a casi catorce años de prisión.
«La pena de prisión impuesta a Leopoldo López es sólo el último ejemplo del ataque continuo del gobierno de Maduro a los opositores políticos y su total desprecio por un sistema judicial justo e imparcial. El PPE, junto con muchos observadores en Europa y en todo el mundo, ve el veredicto y la sentencia de Leopoldo López como un intento del gobierno de Maduro para destruir la disidencia política e infundir miedo en aquellos que buscan un camino diferente para su país,» dijo el secretario general del PPE Antonio López-Istúriz.
«Leopoldo López, junto con otros presos políticos, se llevan la peor parte de los abusos de la represión de Maduro. Al mismo tiempo, el pueblo de Venezuela está sufriendo cada vez más la terrible situación económica provocada por Maduro y el gobierno anterior. En estos tiempos difíciles, el PPE pide al gobierno venezolano la libertad inmediata de todos los presos políticos y que cumpla con su responsabilidad de garantizar elecciones libres, justas y transparentes el 6 de diciembre. El pueblo venezolano debe tener el derecho a expresar su voluntad política sin miedo con el fin de buscar un futuro más democrático y próspero para su país», concluyó el secretario general del PPE.

The European People’s Party (EPP) strongly condemns the unjust and politically motivated verdict against prominent Venezuelan opposition leader Leopoldo López, who was sentenced to nearly fourteen years in prison.
“The prison sentence imposed on Leopoldo López is just the latest example of the Maduro government’s continuing assault on political opponents and its utter disregard for a fair and impartial judicial system. The EPP, along with many observers in Europe and around the world, sees the verdict and sentencing of Leopoldo López as an attempt by the oppressive and desperate Maduro government to extinguish political dissent and instill fear in those who seek a different path for their country,” said EPP Secretary General Antonio López-Istúriz.
“Leopoldo López, along with other political prisoners, are bearing the brunt of the abuse as a result of Maduro’s crackdown. At the same time, the people of Venezuela are increasingly suffering from the horrendous economic situation brought about by Maduro and the previous government. In these dire times, the EPP calls on the Venezuelan government to immediately release all political prisoners and to follow through with its responsibility to ensure free, fair and transparent elections on 6 December. The Venezuelan people must have the right to express their political will without fear in order to seek a more democratic and prosperous future for their country,” concluded the EPP Secretary General.
